By: E&P Staff Winchester Print & Stationery, an Ontario printer, recently switched to computer-to-plate output using the News CTP device from ECRM in Tewksbury, Mass.
The producer of community newspapers and magazines, books, business cards, and wide-format inkjet jobs converted to CTP upon realizing its imagesetter was "increasingly unreliable, whilst software upgrades and maintenance were becoming more expensive," Operations Manager Kent Raistrick said in a statement. Selection was narrowed at a November trade show to ECRM and a competitor. Plate pricing and supplier Unisource Canada's recommendation of News CTP figured in the final decision, according to Production Coordinator Kreg Raistrick.
The ECRM News CTP was commissioned last month. With the help of Unisource's ECRM-trained technicians, plates were on press the first day. The Raistricks reported being able a higher screen ruling on newsprint, faster make-readies, improved color consistency, and no more skewed plates.
