By: E&P Staff The Cape Cod Times reported on Friday that its editor, Cliff Schechtman, would step down August 9 to manage local news at Newsday, a Melville, NY-based daily that primarily serves Long Island.
"It's very difficult to leave but I need a new challenge," he said on Thursday. Schechtman has overseen news and editorial content at the Cape Cod newspaper for nearly 10 years. He has been credited with sharpening its coverage of local events with his aggressive style and as a result, has raised its profile across New England.
"Cape Cod, the place and the people it attracts, is really special. But this opportunity to do great journalism at one of the nation's premier newspapers is too tempting to turn down," he added.
The Times Publisher Peter Meyer -- who made the announcements of Schechtman's leaving -- authored a two-page memo to the staff Thursday night praising the editor's contributions.
"Cliff is a hard-driving newsman who is happiest when competition is intense and stakes are high," he wrote. "Those qualities drove the Cape Code Times to be a better newspaper than when he arrived and set the stage for us to achieve still more greatness in the years ahead."
Meyer said he would announce plans for finding a new editor in the coming weeks.
