'Capital-Gazette Newspapers' Names New Editor/Publisher

By: E&P Staff Tom Marquardt has been named editor and publisher of Capital-Gazette Newspapers in Maryland and will start work in his new roles Feb. 29. He will succeed James Brown, who will remain as a consultant.

Marquardt will continue his work as chief of the editorial department in addition to taking on more responsibilities with his new roles. As editor and publisher he will run operations at The Capital in Annapolis and five other newspapers: the Maryland Gazette, The Bowie-Blade News, Crofton News-Crier, West County Gazette, and South County Gazette.

Marquardt started his tenure at Capital-Gazette Newspapers in 1977 as managing editor. He was promoted to executive editor in 2001. Prior to moving to Maryland, Marquardt worked at two Michigan newspapers at the outset of his career, starting at the Big Rapids Pioneer and moving to the Ypsilanti Press.

Brown has been at Capital-Gazette Newspapers since 1985 working first as a controller. Since then he ha served as chief financial officer, general manager, chief executive officer of the newspaper operation and finally as publisher, following the 2007 sale of family-owned Capital-Gazette Newspapers to Landmark Communications.
