By: Jennifer Saba Capital Research and Management Co., an institutional shareholder in several newspaper companies, has upped its ownership in Belo to 5.1% according to a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing released this afternoon.
The company acted on behalf of The Growth Fund of America, a mutual fund advised by Capital Research.
As of Sept. 30, 2005, Capital Research held 4.4% of Belo's Series A shares. The SEC requires shareholders to file with the commission when it holds 5% or more of a company's stock.
Belo, which publishes The Dallas Morning News and The Providence (R.I.) Journal, maintains two classes of stock, Series A and Series B. The descendants of G.B. Dealey control most of Series B stock, which has 10 times the voting power of Series A stock.
Capital Research holds a 3.4% stake in Dow Jones, a 3.2% stake in Knight Ridder, and a 2.1% stake in Gannett.
