By: E&P Staff An Atlanta Mercedes-Benz dealership has apologized for an Atlanta Journal-Constitution cartoon, according to the conservative NewsBusters.org blog.
Mike Luckovich's
cartoon showed a hooded figure holding an American flag while reading a book on torture etiquette to an al-Qaida member.
"Lest anyone think THEY were sponsoring the cartoon, the dealership paid for a full-page ad in the paper to beg for forgiveness," wrote NewsBusters.org.
NewsBusters.org quoted the dealership's ad as saying: "We are sorry! While we strongly affirm the right of free speech, the June 22 Mike Luckovich cartoon depicting the U.S. as torturers on par with al-Qaida was very offensive to us. ..."
The ad also said, among other things, that the dealership "has been a long-time advertiser in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. We have signed an agreement, which we intend to honor, to advertise with them into the future. However, this event has changed the way we view the relationship. For now, we have chosen to spend our ad dollars to let you know that we do not agree with the editorial cartoonist of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. ..."
Luckovich's liberal commentary is distributed by Creators Syndicate. NewsBusters.org is part of the Media Research Center, which was founded by a group of conservatives headed by Creators columnist L. Brent Bozell III.
