Car, Real Estate Classifieds Grow

By: Automotive and real estate classified advertising increased in the second quarter, while employment classifieds continued to lag, according to preliminary figures from the Newspaper Association of America, Vienna, Va.

Auto ad spending rose 6.3% to $1.2 billion while real estate ads jumped 6% to $829 million. Recruitment advertising dropped 20.9% to $1.1 billion while all other classified categories rose 2.7% to $669 million. All classified categories combined dropped 4.1% to $3.8 billion.

Overall, newspaper advertising expenditures dropped 1.8% from the same period last year, to $10.9 billion. Retail ads were down 0.1% to $5.25 billion while national was down 1.7% to $1.8 billion.

Looking at the first and second quarters combined, retail advertising rose 0.5% to $9.8 billion, national dropped 2.6% to $3.5 billion, and all classifieds dropped 8.9% to $7.3 billion.
