Carole Leigh Hutton to Run 'Detroit Free Press'

By: E&P Staff Detroit Free Press Executive Editor Carole Leigh Hutton has been named publisher and editor effective Jan. 1. She succeeds Heath J. Meriwether, who retires at the end of the year.

Another Knight Ridder newspaper, the Bradenton (Fla.) Herald, named Henry Haitz III, publisher of the Centre Daily Times in State College, Pa., as president and publisher, also effective Jan. 1. He replaces Mac Tully, who becomes vice president/operations at Knight Ridder.

Hutton, 47, has been at the Free Press for 13 years, serving in a variety of positions. Previously, she was an editor at The Detroit News.

Haitz, 39, has been at the Centre Daily Times since 1996, holding several positions before becoming publisher. He previously worked at the Press-Telegram of Long Beach, Calif., Suburban Newspapers of Greater St. Louis, and other publications.
