By: E&P Staff To meet increasing insert volume and complexity, Tahoe-Carson Area Newspapers early next year will add a 22-hopper Goss NP632 inserting system equipped for single- or dual-delivery. The sale by Goss International also includes NP200 press gripper, NP404 online inserting system, and its Omnizone supervisory controls.
The Carson City, Nevada, affiliate of Swift Newspapers sought a package of reliable technology from a single vendor rather than facing integration of products from separate suppliers, according to Girish Pandit, Tahoe-Carson regional director of production operations. His group produces the Tahoe Daily Tribune, Lahontan Valley News, Nevada Appeal, Tahoe World, Sierra Sun, North Lake Tahoe Bonanza, and The Record-Courier.
In addition to greater freestanding insert volumes and demands for targeted zoning, the publisher regularly inserts several common sections into multiple papers. With tight production windows for the seven titles, said Pandit, Omnizone controls will aid in scheduling and planning inserts. The selection also was made to support future zoning by specified ZIP code and, for both advertising and editorial content, for Spanish-speaking readers.
Furthermore, according to Publisher John DiMambro, the papers increased their frequency of publication, and another daily was acquired late last year. "To maintain that growth pattern, we need inserting components that are compatible to our new press," he said. NP632 inserters also recently were installed at dailies in San Francisco, Stockton, and Modesto.
