Cartoon-Caption Contest in Philly

Posted
By: Dave Astor A cartoon-caption contest received a big reception among Philadelphia Daily News readers. Too bad the receivers tweaked in the winning entry didn't make more big receptions.

After Janet Jackson's mammorable display during the Super Bowl halftime show, Daily News editorial cartoonist Signe Wilkinson drew a breast popping out of a TV screen as dad, mom, and junior watched. Readers were asked to put words in the mouth of the father, who was covering his kid's eyes.

More than 800 Daily News readers sent in caption suggestions. The winning entry -- "Well, that's another one that Pinkston & Thrash would have dropped!" -- referred to underperforming Philadelphia Eagles wide receivers Todd Pinkston and James Thrash. It was written by Clay Belcher, who saw his caption printed in the paper and won a Daily News T-shirt.

Among the other top entries: "Now, now, Willie! It'll be on the front page of the Daily News soon enough!"; "Houston, we have a Jackson!"; "You'd think Justin would be weaned by now"; and "Got milk?" The first caption commented on the way the Philadelphia paper played the halftime-show story, the second referred to the Super Bowl's Texas locale, and the third mentioned the man who yanked at Jackson's top -- fellow singer Justin Timberlake.

"The contest was really a lot of fun," Wilkinson told E&P. "The only lesson I take from it is that people are genuinely sick of what passes for American culture -- even as they are glued to the tube -- and that they love to get their two cents in whenever they're asked."

Wilkinson is a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist syndicated by the Washington Post Writers Group.
