Cartoon Shows Cover 'Garfield' and Baseball

By: E&P Staff The Cartoon Art Museum of San Francisco is offering "Garfield" and baseball-cartoon exhibits starting May 28.

"Garfield: Meow and Then" includes original artwork dating back to the comic's first year in 1978. There will also be animation cels from the "Garfield & Friends" TV series, advertising and promotional art, and licensed merchandise. The "Garfield" comic, created by Jim Davis, is distributed by Universal Press Syndicate.

"Play Ball: Classic Baseball Cartoons from 1945-1965" primarily displays the work of Willard Mullin, but also includes drawings by Lou Darvas, Karl Hubenthal, Burris Jenkins, and Reginald Marsh. Pictured in the cartoons are players such as Bob Feller, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Johnny Mize, Stan Musial, Pee Wee Reese, Jackie Robinson, and Babe Ruth. Autographed baseballs and other memorabilia will also be displayed.

The "Garfield" show runs through Sept. 25, and the baseball-cartoon exhibit through Oct. 30.
