By: Dave Astor Editorial cartoonist Chip Bok, who is taking a buyout from the Akron Beacon Journal, will work through the election rather than leave the Ohio newspaper today.
That's according to
a Monday post on Alan Gardner's Daily Cartoonist blog.
Gardner also calculated today that the ranks of editorial cartoonists have dropped by 28 in the past three years (mostly staff people but some syndicated-only creators). "I did not count those who left a print job for another print job," said the blogger. Sixteen of the 28 are gone in 2008 alone.
Observers have estimated that there are now fewer than 80 staff editorial cartoonist positions remaining in the U.S., compared to hundreds decades ago.
