Cartoonist Saw a Home Run in the Future

Posted
By: E&P Staff "Mr. Boffo" cartoonist Joe Martin accurately "predicted" that Chicago White Sox slugger Paul Konerko would hit a home run this past Sunday.

Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune wrote that the May 21 "Mr. Boffo" comic -- created two months ago -- contained a scene about a person wanting Konerko to hit a home run. Sure enough, Konerko swatted two round-trippers that day.

"Originally, I was going to use Barry Bonds, but I didn't know if he would be in jail or what by now," Martin told Mitchell. "I remembered from the World Series that Konerko was doing well, so I picked him."

Konerko's response to the comic? "That's cool," he said.

Mitchell's piece was linked to by DailyCartoonist.com and ComicsReporter.com.

The Wisconsin-based Martin last year launched his own syndicate. Neatly Chiseled Features distributes "Mr. Boffo" as well as other Martin comics such as "Willy 'n Ethel" and "Cats With Hands." Martin was previously syndicated by Tribune Media Services.
