Cartoonists' Award Sparks Protest

Posted
By: Dave Astor The Cartoonists Rights Network (CRN) has given its Courage in Editorial Cartooning Award to the 11 Danish artists who drew the Prophet Muhammad.

Two of CRN's 15 affiliate members resigned to protest the Danish cartoonists being honored, CRN Founder/Executive Director Robert Russell told E&P Saturday at the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists convention here.

A separate recipient of the courage award was Algerian cartoonist Ali Dilam, who accepted in person at the Denver Press Club Friday night. Dilam has been arrested six times for cartoons satirizing Algerian officials.

CRN also honored Denver Rocky Mountain News Editor John Temple on behalf of editors in the U.S. and abroad who published the Danish cartoons -- a risky action given the strong protests and rioting sparked by the drawings.

In addition, CRN has elected a new president -- editorial cartoonist Joel Pett of the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader and the Cartoonists & Writers Syndicate/New York Times Syndicate. Pett succeeds Kevin "KAL" Kallaugher, the CWS/NYTS-syndicated editorial cartoonist who formerly worked for The Sun of Baltimore.
