Cartoonists to Judge 'Science Idol' Contest

Posted
By: E&P Staff Syndicated cartoonists will be among the judges of the third annual "Science Idol" cartoon contest from the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), according to ComicsDC blogger Mike Rhode.

The judges include "Speed Bump" cartoonist Dave Coverly of Creators Syndicate, editorial cartoonist Kevin "Kal" Kallaugher of The Economist magazine and the New York Times Syndicate-marketed CartoonArts International, and editorial cartoonist Mike Keefe of The Denver Post and Cagle Cartoons.

Also: "Non Sequitur" cartoonist Wiley Miller of Universal Press Syndicate, editorial cartoonist Signe Wilkinson of The Philadelphia Daily News and the Washington Post Writers Group (she also does the "Family Tree" comic for United Media), and graphic designer Jesse Springer -- last year's contest winner.

"The absurdity of political interference in science is fertile ground for satire," said Michael Halpern, program manager of the UCS Scientific Integrity Program.

June 11 is the submissions deadline. The winner will receive $500 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. -- and the 12 finalists' cartoons will appear on a 2009 calendar.
