Cartoonist's Widow Criticizes Schulz Biography in Blog Comments

Posted
By: E&P Staff Charles M. Schulz's widow, in comments on the "Sans Everything" blog, gave perhaps her most detailed response to the controversial "Schulz and Peanuts" biography released this fall.

David Michaelis' book has been criticized by Schulz family members and others for being too negative, though the biography has also received positive reviews.

Jeannie Schulz said, among other things: "Michaelis weaves a story of Sparky's [Schulz's nickname] cold Norwegian-German parents and goes on to portray Sparky as a cold and indifferent parent to his children.... I was married to Charles Schulz for 26 years, and in all that time together ... I never heard Sparky express any doubt of the love both his parents had for him and he, in turn, spoke often of his love for his 'little kids.'"

The rest of Jeannie Schulz's comments (prefaced by a Jeet Heer intro) can be seen here. The post containing her words was linked to yesterday by Tom Spurgeon's Comics Reporter blog.

Reruns of the "Peanuts" strip continue to be syndicated by United Media.
