Caryle Murphy, whose reporting from Kuwait during Iraq’s 1990 invasion earned her a Pulitzer Prize, died Oct. 19 in Fairfax County, Virginia, at 79, The New York Times reports. Her husband, Herbert Howe, told the newspaper that the cause was viral pneumonia.
Murphy was The Washington Post’s Cairo bureau chief when she traveled to Kuwait shortly before the invasion, despite being ill. One of the few Western journalists there when Iraqi forces arrived, she continued reporting for about a month before escaping to Saudi Arabia.
