Casino Buys Full-Page Ads for Bennett's Vegas Gig -- in Chicago?

Posted
By: Mark Fitzgerald For the better part of a month now, full-page ads have been running in Chicago?s daily newspapers announcing upcoming concerts by Tony Bennett.

But the ads don?t alert Chicagoans that the famed crooner of ?I Left My Heart In San Francisco? and ?Rags To Riches? is coming to sing at the Symphony Center downtown, or at the outdoor Ravinia Festival in suburban Highland Park.

Instead, they advertise concert dates taking place 1,780 miles away from State Street -- at the Las Vegas Hilton.

The Hilton is making quite a to-do about Bennett?s Oct. 20 and 21 concert appearances. But Chicago is the only market outside of Vegas in which the hotel is running newspaper ads.

So what?s the deal, E&P asked Ira David Sternberg, the Hilton?s vice President of communications and community relations.

?Chicago is a good market for Las Vegas generally, and this property in particular,? Sternberg replied. ?And obviously when you have an icon like Tony Bennett, who is important nationally, but particularly popular in Chicago, it makes sense to market? the concert in Chicago.

Sternberg wasn?t sure what the Bennett newspaper campaign is costing the hotel-casino, but said those ads are part of an ongoing marketing campaign for the property.
