Catholic League: Some 'Opus'-Dropping Papers Guilty of a Double Standard

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights (CLRCR) issued a statement today criticizing newspapers for dropping cartoons that might offend Muslims while running cartoons that might offend Catholics.

CLRCR was reacting to the news that at least 25 of the 200 or so "Opus" clients planned not to publish the Aug. 26 and Sept. 2 installments of Berkeley Breathed's Washington Post Writers Group comic. The strips contain a sex joke and Islamic references.

?The Washington Post, and all the other newspapers which refuse to print these cartoons, are simultaneously sporting their cowardice and bigotry," stated CLRCR President Bill Donohue.

He added: "In 2006, this same newspaper ... depicted the disgraced Congressman Mark Foley as a candidate for the priesthood at 'Saint Paedophilia's.' In 2004, it displayed a bishop monitoring Catholics in a voting booth, and it showed a habit-wearing nun brandishing a ruler while 'little Mel Gibson gets beaten to a bloody pulp by Sister Dolores Excruciata of the Little Sisters of the Holy Agony.' In 2002, it depicted a bishop and two priests as the 'Axis of Evil'...."

Donahue contended that some newspapers won't run cartoons that might offend Muslims because these papers fear a more violent reaction than they would get from Catholic or Jewish readers.
