CBS Poll: 2 Out of 3 Want Troops Home from Iraq

By: E&P Staff A new CBS polls reveals that despite the "surge" in Iraq, more Americans than ever are calling for a U.S. pullout. Two out of three want troops withdrawn now, including 40% who want all troops removed -- a 7% increase since just April. Few newspaper editorials, so far, have called for a pullout of any kind.

More Americans than ever before, 77%, say the war is going badly, up from 66% two months ago. Nearly half, 47 percent, say it's going very badly.

President Bush's approval rating hit a new low -- 27%, and down 3% since May.

In other stunning numbers: 75% say the country is on the wrong track, and Congress also gets a very low approval rating of 27%, a startling 9% drop since last month.

"Presidents usually have popularity problems in their last two years in office," said Kathy Frankovic, CBS News director of surveys. "But the combination of shrinking support for the war in Iraq and opposition to domestic initiatives like the immigration bill has made assessment of this administration especially negative.

"Americans don't only disapprove of the president; they overwhelmingly see the country as on the wrong track," Frankovic said.
