CBS to Focus on Loss of Cartoon Jobs

Posted
By: Dave Astor A segment focusing on the loss of editorial cartooning jobs is scheduled to air this week on the "CBS Evening News with Dan Rather." The exact day of broadcast is not yet known, but tomorrow or Thursday are the most likely possibilities.

Cartoonists interviewed include Kirk Anderson and Mark Fiore, according to a CBS News spokesperson. They lost their jobs at the St. Paul Pioneer Press and San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News, respectively, in recent years.

The number of staff editorial cartoonists has decreased significantly during the past decade as a number of daily newspapers cut costs and/or decided they didn't want to run visual commentary that might anger powerful interests.
