CC1 eXaminer Controling Register, Cutting Waste

Posted
By: E&P Staff CC1 Inc., based in Portsmouth, N.H., recently installed three of its eXaminer automatic register control systems at The Dover (Del.) Post, where they are used on two Goss Mercury and one Tensor color towers used to print 11 weeklies on the Delmarva peninsula, as well as other products.

Since installation, overall registration consistency has been "greatly improved" and waste levels have fallen, Dover Post President Jim Flood Jr. said in a statement. Calling the systems "a necessity in today's newspaper environment," Flood added, "What was acceptable five years ago is no longer acceptable."

The eXaminer provides accurate, consistent control of four-color register (running and sidelay) throughout a press run, including start-up, stops, splices, and plate changes. It automatically pre-positions color and cut- off compensators for web path changes. It also automates color register control to maintain fast, consistent print-register quality throughout speed changes (after splices, web breaks, go-downs) and immediate re-establishes register after edition or plate changes. Full and lateral register motorization are available.

Also used in flexo newspaper printing, an examiner system was installed on one of eight Goss Flexoliner units at The Modesto (Calif.) Bee three years ago, where, besides reporting superior quality, Bee Pressroom Manager Richard Maxwell said waste reduction improved by 0.75% of the overall 2.2% waste. "By installing the eXaminer system on the first unit, we no longer have to slow the paper down to get it back into register," he said.
