By: The Gazette of Cedar Rapids has named Dave Storey as its new publisher.

Storey, who has been general manager of the newspaper since 2004, succeeds Joe Hladky, who had served as publisher since 1980.

Storey, 52, joined The Gazette in 1992 as its advertising director. In 1998, he was promoted to vice president of advertising for Gazette Communications.

In his new role, Storey will oversee all aspects of the business of the newspaper and will sit on the newspaper's Editorial Board and weigh in on its editorial positions.

Hladky, the chairman of the Gazette Communications board of directors, said Storey's appointment reflects an appropriate change in the management structure of the company.

"We know that this company needs to expand regionally and that would mean changing the structure to having someone as the local publisher who can focus strictly on the footprint of The Gazette," Hladky said.

Storey said it is an exciting time to be in the media and newspaper business.

"The industry is in evolution, and I think there are a lot of opportunities for us to develop and get out in front of what people want from a readership and community standpoint," he said. "We need to give them the information they are requiring, whether it's in print, online or through mobile devices."

Storey will also serve as president of the Iowa Newspaper Association in 2008, and he has been active in numerous regional and national newspaper and marketing organizations. He and his wife, Rhonda, are the parents of two sons, Kyle, 23, and Kevin, 21, and a daughter, Katie, 14.
