By: E&P Staff Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based Gazette Company, publisher of The Gazette, said Tuesday it was reducing its workforce by about 100 across all its business units, which include a television station and commercial printing operation.

Gazette is also "reorganizing the company in line with current revenue," President and CEO Chuck Peters said, announcing several top management changes.

Steve Buttry, who joined the company in 2008, will now be responsible for "leading all information content creation for all products and services of Gazette Communications, whether print, online, mobile or special products," Peters said.

Gazette Publisher Dave Storey also announced that Lyle Muller, who most recently held the title of senior editor, has been named editor of the newspaper, effective immediately.

Peters said the company had been working for two years to "reconfigure" the company, but that events had caught up with it, and required a new reorganization.

"As we finalized that process, we never expected to also be confronted with the worst natural disaster in Iowa's history and the weakest national economy in decades," Peters said, referring to the devastating flood of 2008. "Many of our advertisers have been impacted at the same time, and newsprint prices have increased significantly. The actions we are taking are designed to allow us to pursue these new opportunities to serve our communities while adjusting to current financial realities."

Peters said at the time of the flood, Gazette Company employed 600 people. "Following this reorganization and a reduction in workforce it is anticipated that the company will employ approximately 500 people," the company said in a statement.
