Champaign 'News-Gazette' to Halt Afternoon Edition

Posted
By: The News-Gazette in central Illinois will become a morning-only newspaper beginning June 1, following a national trend.

Editor and Publisher John Foreman said Friday cost considerations and changing reader habits swayed the decision to drop the newspaper's afternoon editions.

The newspaper has been morning-only on Saturdays and Sundays. But on weekdays there are both morning and afternoon editions, depending on delivery area.

Foreman says the company will save about 1 percent of its operating costs, mostly through both layoffs and attrition.

The most recent figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations indicate the newspaper has Sunday circulation of more than 44,000 and weekday circulation of nearly 42,000.
