Charles Kelly, creator and longtime publisher of a community newspaper in Detroit, succumbed to cancer Feb. 5 at his home in Highland Park, Mich. He was 73.
In 1978, Kelly and his second wife, Teresa, founded the Citizen, a weekly newspaper dedicated to covering the black community in the Greater Detroit area. Kelly, a longtime advocate of independent journalism, got his start in the newspaper industry working for black newspapers in Chicago.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa, and five daughters: Valorie Franklin, Melinda Kelly, Karletta Kelly, Catherine Kelly and Karima Sorel.
