By: E&P Staff In an interview with ABC, Vice President Cheney, four days before the critical midterm elections, hit the media again, and declared that it's "full speed ahead" for the administration's Iraq policy. "The press," he said, "may not like it."
On another subject, asked why the president may not get enough credit for the low unemployment rate, Cheney said, "You guys don't help-- bad news gets covered, the good news out there every day doesn't get the attention."
The interview came on a day when Vanity Fair published on its Web site a new article detailing harsh criticisms of the administration from several key "neo-con" allies such as Richard Perle and Kenneth Adelman. The latter called it downright "incompetent" and "dysfunctional."
Cheney said he "fundamentally" disagreed with that.
Perle had told Vanity Fair that the decision to invade Iraq was wrong, and looks worse all the time: "At the end of the day, you have to hold the president responsible."
On Iraq, Cheney said, "We've got the basic strategy right." Seven more U.S. servicemen were killed on Friday, with the carnage from October not halting after the end of Ramadan, as the administration promised.
"We're not running for office," said Cheney, who has been campaigning for GOP candidates all week, along with the president. "We're doing what we think is right."
On the Vanity Fair article, Cheney said, "I haven't seen the piece I'm not going to comment on it. I think there is no question that it is a tough war but it is also the right thing to do. And it is very important that we complete the mission." He said every war had "challenges" and this one was no different.
Adelman, who served on the Defense Policy Board with Perle, said Bush, Defense Rumsfeld and others in the administration "turned out to be among the most incompetent teams in the postwar era. Not only did each of them, individually, have enormous flaws, but together they were deadly, dysfunctional."
