Gene Williams has been named executive editor of the Courier-Post in Cherry Hill, N.J.

Williams joins the south Jersey daily from The Star Press in Muncie, Ind., where he was appointed executive editor in 2007 and was named to the additional post of general manager last year.

Under his leadership, The Star Press twice won the general excellence award from the Hoosier State Press Association and a silver medal as the most improved newspaper from Gannett. Williams entered the newspaper industry as a sportswriter and an editor and later helped launch a small business portal for Netscape.

Succeeding Williams as GM in Muncie is Cheryl Lindus, who has served as president and publisher of the Montgomery (Ala.) Advertiser since 2008.

"We are very pleased to welcome Sam back to Gannett," U.S. Community Publishing President Bob Dickey said in a statement. "He is bringing diverse experience and valued leadership to our Montgomery market and will build on the solid foundation Cheryl helped establish in this important market.”
