By: E&P Staff The Chester Gould-Dick Tracy Museum in Woodstock, Ill., closed yesterday.
E&P had reported back in February that the 1991-founded museum would shut down this month for economic reasons.
The museum's collection includes original "Dick Tracy" comics by Gould, his drawing desk, photos, letters from presidents, rejected strips Gould did before creating "Dick Tracy," and more.
Some items from the collection will continue to be displayed in town, and a virtual museum is planned at DickTracyMuseum.com, according to a story by Jenn Wiant posted on NWHerald.com.
Gould (1900-1985) -- whose comic ran in about 600 newspapers at its peak -- lived in Woodstock much of his life.
Dick Locher now does the 1931-launched "Dick Tracy" for Tribune Media Services. Locher is also a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist syndicated by TMS.
