The Reader Institute for Community Journalism, publisher of the Chicago Reader, on Tuesday announced the immediate layoffs of six non-union employee staff positions, spurred by an urgent need to reduce costs in order to avoid organizational closure.
In addition to the layoffs, RICJ CEO Solomon Lieberman submitted his resignation to the RICJ board of directors on Monday, Jan. 13.
“We are deeply grateful for Sol’s hard work and dedication during his tenure, and wish him the very best in his future endeavors,” says Chicago Reader Publisher Amber Nettles.
Since the Reader’s departure from the Sun-Times in 2018, the organization has worked tirelessly to grow and sustain its mission of supporting Chicago’s arts, culture and communities. Unfortunately, a combination of financial losses, operational challenges and external pressures has brought the Reader to an imminent risk of closure.
Despite the challenges, the Reader sees a path forward. Plans for the future include:
The Reader’s leadership encourages open communication and welcomes questions as they navigate these next steps together.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to preserving the legacy of the Chicago Reader and will do everything possible to secure its future,” said Nettles. “We thank everyone for their understanding, resilience and continued support during this extraordinarily difficult time.”
“We welcome the opportunity to discuss options for support, as we work tirelessly to continue operations,” said Ellen Kaulig, chief of staff. “In this time we remember the words of Mike Royko, ‘One of the hallmarks of Chicago is that we do so many things in an original manner.’ And we are dedicated to our commitment to amplify and encourage all of the originals in Chicago in our own way. The Reader does it different and will continue to do so.”
