By: E&P Staff The SouthtownStar debuted its new tabloid format and six-day publication frequency Monday with a promotional contest asking readers what they like best about living in Chicago's South Side and southern suburbs.
Published by Sun-Times Media Group (STMG), the paper is promising more local news of what it calls "Southland" with "more names and faces of readers' friends and neighbors."
On Friday, the paper will launch its Weekend Edition, which will combine features previously published in the Friday and Saturday edition. Sunday editions will continue to feature eight different Neighborhood Star sections with coverage of South Side and suburban communities.
The paper will publish six days a week.
SouthtownStar was created in 2007 by the merger of the Daily Southtown, which was launched in 1906, and the weekly Star Newspapers, founded in 1901.
"The new look and the launch of our new Weekend Edition will provide readers with the information they need, and our advertisers with exciting opportunities," SouthtownStar President/Publisher Fred Lebolt said in a statement.
Jerry Alger, vice president of advertising for STMG's Sun-Times News Group, said the tabloid format allows advertisers more premium placement opportunities.
To promote the new format and frequency, the SouthtownStar on Monday launched a contest called "South Siders Stand Up," in which readers submit "reasons why they love living in the Southland."
The essays will be judged on creativity and originality, with participants having a chance to win up to $1,000 in gift certificates from local retailers. The contest will run for four weeks.
