By: E&P Staff The Daily Herald in suburan Chicago published the final "Just Dogs" column Tuesday, marking the retirement of its columnist, Alice Terrill, at age 91.
"Just Dogs" column has run in the paper since 1947, when it was still 21 years away from becoming a daily. The column was started by her husband Dave Terrill, whose enthusiasm about dogs led him to become a obedience judge with the American Kennel Club, according to a story by Daily Herald correspondent Eileen O. Daday.
Dave Terrill developed cancer that eventually claimed his life in 1982. During his illness, Alice Terrill began writing the column, first under his name and then, when he died, under her own byline. She also went back to work full time at the Daily Herald, serving in numerous editorial capacities until her retirement in 2005. She continued the column as a freelancer.
