Sun-Times Media said Monday all 47 of its dailies and weeklies will carrying Athlon Sports, the monthly magazine that launches Oct. 21.

Athlon Sports will appear each month in Thursday editions of the Chicago Sun-Times, SouthtownStar; Post-Tribune of Gary, Ind.; and these Illinois dailies: Courier-News in Elgin; Beacon-News in Aurora, HeraldNews in Joliet; Naperville Sun; Lake County News-Sun and the weekly Pioneer Press and The Doings newspapers.

With its debut, Athlon Sports will circulate 7 million copies in newspapers across the country, which would make it the largest sports magazine in the U.S.

Sun-Times Media CEO and Vice Chairman Jeremy Halbreich said the magazine is a good fit with the chain’s extensive sports offering including the YourSeason.com prep sports Website and print coverage from professional to prep sports.

Athlon Sports is a leader in the sports magazine industry, publishing leading magazine brands including Pro Football, Fantasy Football, National College Football, Big Ten Football, College Basketball, Pro Basketball, Racing, Golf and more,” Halbreich said. “It makes sense for us to get together and offer our readers the best of both worlds: local sports and national sports coverage.”

Advertisers will benefit, he added in a statement, “by being able to reach local and national audiences through a diverse array of attractively priced media packages.”
