'Chicago Sun-Times' Launches Electronic Edition of Paper

By: E&P Staff The Chicago Sun-Times has announced the launch of an electronic edition of its flagship paper.

The Sun-Times "e-paper," as it is called, will be a digital replica of the print product, and will be delivered to email inboxes every morning. Enhanced navigation features and hotlinks to URL addresses are some of the perks of the new version.

The e-paper will be available for print subscribers for free; non-print subscribers can sign up for the e-paper for $9.99 every four weeks, or $74.99 for an annual subscription. The Sun-Times is currently running a seven-day free trial of the e-paper at its Web site.

The Sun-Times has partnered with Clickshare Service Corp., in order to complete this venture. Clickshare is a privately owned company from Williamstown, Mass., that manages subscriptions and access control for the paper's Web site. Its subscribers include Crain Communications Inc., and Journal Register Co. The company provides Web sites with capabilities such as online registration and credit card billing, site registration, authentication, and subscriptions or per-click billing services.

The launch of the online subscriber edition is the latest of several changes that have occurred for the Sun-Times. The publisher of the paper, the Sun-Times News Group, recently entered into a contract with the Chicago Tribune Company for home delivery and suburban single-copy delivery of the Sun-Times and some of its suburban publications.
