'Chicago Sun-Times' Sports Columnist Mariotti Gets 3-Year Extension

By: E&P Staff Love-him-or-hate-him sports columnist Jay Mariotti is staying with the Chicago Sun-Times for at least another three years, the paper said Tuesday.

In an announcement by Editor in Chief Michael Cooke, Mariotti's contract was extended through May 2011.

Mariotti -- who is noted for his feuds with local figures such as Chicago White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen and Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf -- is known nationally as a panelist on ESPN's daily sports talk show "Around The Horn."

He began his column at the Sun-Times in 1991.

"Chicago is a die-hard sports town, and Jay is a focal point of our strong, award-winning team that produces simply the best sports news in print and online anywhere," Cooke said in a statement. "We are excited to continue working with Jay, and for him to continue to pull no punches when it comes to his exceptional sports commentary."

"The Sun-Times provides for a strong base from which to connect with readers while I continue my television work and branch into other broadcast and Web ventures," Mariotti said in a statement.
