By: E&P Staff The Chicago Tribune told its employees Tuesday it would reduce the newsroom by 80 positions by the end of August, but because several positions are currently unfilled it could actually be closer to 55.
Currently the newsroom has 578 employees. The paper also announced it will reduce its page count by 13% each week.

reported that other departments will get hit but that executives would not disclose the number.
"Like many newspapers, we're felling the financial pressures," Hanke Gratteau, the Chicago Tribune's managing editor for news, told Rosenthal.
In late 2005, the newsroom had 670 staffers.
Last month, Tribune Co. executives said during a conference call that they expected its papers to strip about 500 pages a week by utilizing a 50/50 ad to edit ratio. Tribune newspapers across the country are working on redesigns, which are expected to be completed by September. The Orlando Sentinel was the first paper in the stable to roll out a new look in June.
