By: E&P Staff The Chicago Tribune is busting up its "Friday" weekend entertainment section, replacing it with "At Play," a section calling itself "Chicagoland's best guide to dining and leisure," which debuted Thursday, and "On the Town," which launches on Friday and concentrates on movies, arts, music, and live entertainment.
James Warren, the Tribune's deputy managing editor/features, said the idea is to give readers more entertainment and leisure information earlier in the week. "We're giving them daily access to fun events and activities, whether they're planning ahead for this weekend or the next or looking for something to do tonight," he said in a statement.
With the launch of the two redesigned sections, the Tribune is also bringing into its daily paper more features from its successful youth-oriented Web feature Metromix, an entertainment planner. The Tribune's youth-oriented daily, RedEye, has made heavy use of Metromix listing since the tabloid launched two years ago. The Thursday At Play section includes a two-week Metromix planning guide.
A daily entertainment planner from Metromix will also run weekdays in the "Tempo" feature section, in the "Weekend" section on Saturdays, and Sundays in the "Arts & Entertainment" section.
Restaurant reviews, which had run in the old Friday section, now run Thursdays, as does Terry Armour's "Afterhours" feature about nightlife. The section includes a new column from sportswriter Steve Rosenbloom that is called "Vice," and focuses on, as the debut section said Thursday, "the adult entertainment scene (legal, of course!)."
