'Chicago Tribune' Delivering Suburban Rival 'Daily Herald' Single-Copy Circ

By: Mark Fitzgerald With considerable ballyhoo -- and some early stumbling --the Chicago Tribune in August took over all home-delivery and single-copy distribution for its city rival, the Chicago Sun-Times, and the other Sun-Times Media Group papers in the Chicago market.

Far more quietly, the Tribune has taken on single-copy delivery for its chief suburban competitor, the Daily Herald in Arlington Heights, Ill.

Daily Herald Publisher Doug Ray confirmed that, after first testing Tribune delivery in its Naperville and Antioch single-copy stops, the Chicago daily is handling all its single-copy delivery.

It's not a dramatic change for the Daily Herald, Ray said. "We never had our own single-copy delivery force," he said. Instead, the paper contracted with independents who also delivered the Sun-Times in the suburbs. Those carriers mostly went out of business with the consolidation of Tribune and Sun-Times delivery.

The Daily Herald is a classic home-delivered newspaper, with single-copy sales amounting to only about 6% to 7% of circulation. Ray said there are no plans to turn home delivery over to the Tribune.
