By: E&P Staff The Chicago Tribune has announced two replacements for managing editor James O?Shea, who was tapped yesterday as the new editor of the Los Angeles Times. George de Lama has been named managing editor for news and James Warren has been named managing editor for features.
Both de Lama and Warren were previously deputy managing editors under O?Shea at the Tribune.
Tribune Editor Ann Marie Lipinski told staff members in a note that the paper has had dual managing editors in the past, and that it should be a smooth transition. She called de Lama and Warren "gifted journalists and managers with long records of excellence at the Tribune."
"I feel very fortunate to have George and Jim as colleagues and look forward to working with them in their expanded roles," wrote Lipinski.
De Lama?s journalism career begin with the Tribune during a stint as a summer intern. He joined the paper in 1978 as a metro reporter, and went on to become a national and foreign correspondent, chief of correspondents, national and foreign editor, and deputy managing editor for news, which he has been since 2001.
Before becoming a deputy managing editor for features in 2001, Warren was editor of the Tribune?s Tempo feature section and its Washington bureau chief, when he became a steady cable news guest. Warren has also worked for the Chicago Sun-Times and The Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J.
Referring to O'Shea's sudden departure, Lipinski wrote: "Jim has been a tremendous colleague and friend and I am going to miss him dearly. An editor?s relationship with her managing editor is important in a thousand ways, and I have been luckier than I can say to have been running this great paper in partnership with Jim. He has been a source of wisdom, inspiration, courage, leadership and, very importantly, humor. You all know he?s a great journalist; I hope you also know how proud he is of you. His love for the Tribune is deep and this decision to leave has not been easy.
"But he goes believing, as our coverage said today, that he can be helpful in Los Angeles. I believe that too."
