Chicken Promotes San Diego Jobs Site

By: Gregory Solman (Adweek.com) A regional television spot promoting Sign On San Diego's career placement Web site broke Tuesday in the San Diego market. The Web site is owned by The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Dubbed "Chewy's Chicken" after the sign ineptly hawked by a man in a chicken suit on a San Diego street corner, the 30-second ad's uninterrupted clip resembles a home video. As the bird struggles with his sign, an onscreen super reads, "There are better jobs than this," and a voiceover adds, "Careers. SignonSanDiego.com. Hundreds of new listings every day. Get on it."

"We are portraying one of the worst sign spinners, a true misfit for the job," said Michael Mark, CEO and creative director of NYCA, the Encinitas, Calif., agency that created the commercial. "So we got a very talented guy who normally works at Disney as [the character] Aladdin. It's not easy to look that bad."

Mark said the spot would run as a local insert on cable networks and regionally for those considering a move to San Diego. He estimated the buy at less than $750,000, which includes a sponsorship of the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl.

NYCA has also done creative for, among others, TaylorMade-adidas golf clubs and the Union-Tribune.
