By: E&P Staff A series about child laborers in Mexico won the $5,000 first prize in the "Latin America and the Millennium Development Goals Journalism Awards" contest, which was organized by the Inter Press Service (IPS) and the United Nations Development Program.

IPS is affiliated with Global Information Network, the news service that distributes stories from Africa and other parts of the developing world to newspapers and other media outlets in the U.S. and Canada.

The child labor series was written by a team lead by reporter Marcela Turati and published this June in the Mexican paper Excelsior.
