'Chillicothe Gazette' to Cease Press Operations

Posted
By: Meg Campbell The Goss Community press at the Gannett Co.'s Chillicothe (Ohio) Gazette will fall silent in January, when printing of the 13,731-circulation daily begins at a facility 40 miles away in the city of Carroll.

The Gazette will be printed on a Manugraph DGM Advantage press in a 36,500-square-foot commercial printing operation acquired by Gannett in June as part of a deal that included eight weekly shoppers and specialty publications.

The consolidation is an effort to achieve economies of scale, says Gazette publisher Rick Szabrak, explaining that his paper is the last of the 10 dailies in Gannett's Newspaper Network of Central Ohio to operate its own press. The other nine print at facilities in Newark and Mansfield. The move also will give the Gazette the opportunity to offer more color positions, Szabrak adds.

The move will result in the elimination of 12 full-time and seven part-time positions in the pressroom, according to the Gazette, although Szabrak noted that a number of those employees will be taking positions at the Carroll facility.

Publishing for more than 200 years, the Chillicothe Gazette is the oldest continually operated daily west of the Allegheny Mountains. The paper has not yet decided what it will do with its Goss Community press, Szabrak says.
