Chip Bok's Sotomayor Cartoon Draws Fire

Posted Thursday, June 4, 2009 12:00 am

By: E&P Staff Some women's groups are voicing outrage over Tuesday's editorial cartoon by Creators Syndicate's Chip Bok, which depicts Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor strung up like a pi?ata with a sombrero-wearing President Obama handing out bats to Republican Congressmen.

?Did the journalistic community not learn anything from the New York Post monkey cartoon?? asks Joni L. Reynolds of news site The Daily Voice. ?Are there any minorities in these newsrooms when they are reviewing these cartoons??

?Not funny; actually stupid and damaging,? Jean Warner, chair of the Oklahoma Women's Coalition, wrote on the Oklahoman Women?s Network blog. ?A picture speaks louder than words and that cartoon sends a message to women of all ages: ?Back off. Know your place. Or we?ll take a stick to you and teach you a lesson.??

How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
