Former El Paso Times editor Chris Lopez has been named as the new publisher of Norte de Ciudad Juárez, one of the most influential newspapers in Ciudad Juárez.
The owner of El Norte de Ciudad Juárez, Óscar Cantú, announced his retirement as publisher, a position he has held since the newspaper opened almost 25 years ago.
"More than a new era, these changes are an evolution in the transformational process to continue and improve our journalistic work, because the foundation of the company continues to have the same values, principles and motivation that gave birth to this project," Cantu said.
Lopez was editor of the Contra Costa Times newspaper prior to his move to El Paso. He was a reporter and city editor at The Denver Post prior to Contra Costa. Lopez has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Adams State College in his hometown of Alamosa, Colo. He becomes the first American journalist to assume the role of publisher of a Mexican daily newspaper.
