By: E&P Staff Chris Tolles, vice president of marketing at Topix, has been named CEO. He succeeds founder Rich Skrenta who will remain on the board and act as an advisor to the company.
"Chris is the right guy to lead the business in this next phase, which is very sales and marketing intensive," Skrenta said in a statement. "We've given people the ability to connect to their local community through Topix, and I look forward to supporting the company, and Chris, as an active board member."
Tolles joined the news community Web site before the launch in March 2004. Prior to working at Topix, Tolles was co-founder and vice president of marketing at the enterprise social networking company Spoke Software. Skrenta and Tolles have worked together on other projects at Sun Microsystems and were both on the founding team of NewHoo which was sold to Netscape.
"Rich and I have a long history of working together, building companies and building teams, so I was thrilled when he approached me with the opportunity to take the reins at Topix," Tolles said in a statement.
Based in Palo Alto, Calif., Topix counts Tribune, Gannett, and McClatchy as investors.
