The Christian Science Monitor has named Paul Van
Slambrouck, currently the paper's San Francisco bureau chief, to
editor of the national daily, the paper reported Tuesday.

Van Slambrouck succeeds David T. Cook and assumes his new
position on July 15. The announcement was made by John L.
Selover, manager of The Christian Science Publishing Society and
vice chairman of The Christian Science Board of Directors.

Van Slambrouck first started working for the Boston-based paper
in 1976. He started as a local news reporter and worked his
way up as a business reporter, Houston bureau chief, Johannesburg
bureau chief, and international news editor. He joined the San
Jose Mercury News in 1989, but rejoined the Monitor in
1997.

Cook, who has been the Monitor's editor since 1994, will
move to Washington, D.C., as the paper's senior editor and
Washington bureau chief. He succeeds John Dillin, who will retire
on July 31 after 37 years at the paper.
