By: The Christian Science Board of Directors elected M. Victor Westberg of Los Altos, Calif., to publisher of The Christian Science Monitor, succeeding John L. Selover, who died Aug. 1.

Westberg previously served as assistant manager for the publishing group, reporting to Selover.

Westberg was officially elected to the five-person board and as manager of The Christian Science Publishing Society, which includes the Boston-based Monitor and church publications. He will have direct operational responsibility for the Monitor, according to a board spokesman.

Westberg started a wholesale distribution company in California, which he donated to his employees before becoming a full-time Christian Science practitioner -- which the church describes as one "who utilizes the teachings of Christian Science to heal individuals through prayer."

He has held numerous positions in The First Church of Christ, Scientist.
