By: E&P Staff Of the 1,400 layoffs Gannett Co. is ordering at its U.S. Community Publishing Division, the Cincinnati Enquirer and its related digital and print products will absorb about 100, Publisher Margaret Buchanan said in a memo Thursday.
"I understand this is a very difficult time for everyone as each of you waits to see whether your job is included in the layoffs," she wrote. "I am hoping that we will be able to inform employees, who will be laid off, by the end of next week or the following week at the latest. I would estimate that as many as 100 employees will be affected."
The memo, posted on the Gannett Blog operated by former USA Today financial editor Jim Hopkins, said Enquirer Media is the "number one local media company in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky," but the layoffs are nevertheless a necessary adjustment of its cost structure.
"Unfortunately, these are extraordinary economic times we are experiencing, which give us no choice but to adjust our expenses in line with our revenue so we can continue to be a financially viable business," Buchanan wrote.
On Wednesday, Community Publishing Division President Bob Dickey said the job reductions, totaling about 1,400, would be planned and implemented by local publishers.
