By: E&P Staff NowPublic, the citizen journalism Web site, has garnered $10.6 million in financing, AFP reported today.
The Vancouver-based company has seen a monthly growth-rate of 35 percent, and now has nearly 120,000 contributing ?reporters? in more than 140 countries.
TIME Magazine ranked NowPublic as one of its top 50 Web sites of 2007.
The leading financial contributor was Rho Ventures in the United States and Canada.
With the latest boost in funds, NowPublic will be able to grant monetary awards for citizen journalists, and develop a system to ?geo-locate? contributing writers in order to see whether they are in range of a developing news story.
Content on the NowPublic Web site is completely user-provided; roughly half the material is original, with the other half being online links to other news stories.
Volunteer ?deputy editors? work to filter inappropriate material, and communicate with contributors when inaccurate statements are found.
NowPublic makes its money mostly through the syndication of its content, along with fees that are charged when connecting established news organizations with citizen reporters.
