City Won't Release E-Mails About Fire Report

Posted
By: The city of Charleston is refusing a newspaper's request for e-mails related to a report on a furniture store fire that killed nine firefighters.

The report released last month recommended changes at the fire department after the June 18 blaze at the Sofa Super Store. The city hired the panel of experts to do the report. But city officials suggested changes before the report was released.

The (Charleston) Post and Courier has sought e-mails between the city and the experts. The city says they don't have to be released because of attorney-client privilege.

South Carolina Press Association attorney Jay Bender says correspondence with a hired consultant is not confidential under the Freedom of Information Act.
