By: Gene Washer, the publisher of The Leaf-Chronicle in Clarksville, has announced his retirement.
Washer is 68 and has worked at the paper since joining it as a cub reporter in 1963. He has been the publisher since 1991.
The Leaf-Chronicle reported Thursday that Washer had called the paper's staff together the day before and announced his retirement.
Washer said he doesn't like "long, drawn-out things," so he will leave his post on Friday.
Ellen Leifeld, the publisher of Gannett's South Newspaper Group and publisher of The Tennessean, said Washer's nearly half-century commitment as a newspaperman in his community is rare.
Leifeld said a new publisher for the Clarksville publication will be named soon.
